How Long Does It Take to Write a Dissertation?

Word count isn't what decides how long it takes to write a dissertation — see realistic undergrad, master's, and PhD timelines, and what actually matters.

"I thought I'd have the weekend to work on my dissertation, but I'm still trying to finish all the requirements first. Am I already behind?"

I get asked how long it takes to write a dissertation constantly, and the honest answer is almost never a simple yes or no.

It depends on what "requirements" means in your case, how much of the thinking is already done, and which stage of the process you're actually in when you ask it.

As a general planning guide, allow 6–10 weeks for an undergraduate dissertation, 3–6 months for a master's dissertation, and 12–24 months for a PhD dissertation.

More competitive programs, or dissertations involving substantial primary research, testing, or multiple rounds of advisor sign-off, may need additional time.

These numbers are a starting point for planning, not a promise — what actually determines your timeline is the subject of the rest of this post.

The time a piece of writing takes depends far more on how much thinking and preparation happened beforehand than on the final word count.

Why is "it depends" the honest answer?

Two students, same rough scope, completely different timelines. I've watched this play out enough times that it stopped surprising me.

A student who had the material ready

"I already knew the story I wanted to tell. I had my notes and most of the material I wanted to include. Once I had a structure, I was able to get a first draft down in a couple of days and finish in about a week."

Another, working on something similar in size

"I knew roughly what I needed to write, but I had no idea where to start. I kept changing what I wanted to focus on, rewriting sections, second-guessing whether it was strong enough. What looked like a one-week task ended up taking closer to six weeks."

In my nearly 10 years of writing and consultancy, I've seen this pattern hold up again and again — word count was never the real variable. What mattered was how much thinking and preparation happened before the writing started.

When students ask me how long their dissertation will take, the first number they usually offer is the word count — "it's only 12,000 words" or "I've still got 8,000 to go."

I understand why.

It's the number in the handbook, and it feels measurable in a way that "how clear is my thinking" doesn't. But word count doesn't account for the decisions still sitting underneath the words.

A student who knows exactly what each chapter needs to argue can write 2,000 words in an afternoon.

A student who's still deciding what their argument even is can spend a week on 300 words and feel like they're failing, when really, they're doing a different kind of work than writing — they're still thinking.

This is why I'd rather talk to a student about where they are in the decision-making process than how many words they have left.

Have you settled on your research question, or is it still shifting?

Do you know what each section needs to do, or are you hoping the structure will reveal itself as you go?

Those questions predict your timeline far better than a word count ever will.

What's a realistic timeline for an undergraduate dissertation?

One undergraduate computing student I worked with was completing a bachelor's dissertation on machine learning.

The project took over two months, with almost 20 days spent simply refining the research question. From there, the student needed time to develop and test the model, troubleshoot problems, interpret the results, write the dissertation, and revise it before submission.

This is why an undergraduate timeline can't be judged by word count alone. The research, technical work, analysis, and revision can take considerably longer than the writing itself.

How much time should you budget for a master's dissertation?

I remember working with a master's student whose timeline became more complicated when the methodology needed to change.

They were planning a qualitative approach and thematic analysis, but before they could move forward with the analysis, the methodology needed revisions and ethics approval had to be granted first.

A stage they'd expected to move through quickly became dependent on revisions and an external approval process instead. (If you're not sure whether your own methods chapter would survive that kind of scrutiny, this is the difference between describing your method and actually defending it.)

It's a good example of why I don't think a master's dissertation should be planned around writing time alone.

Even when a student knows their topic and has a clear idea of how they want to analyze the data, methodological changes and ethics approval can add weeks to the process.

That's one reason I'd recommend allowing 3–6 months for a master's dissertation timeline rather than assuming everything will progress without delays.

Why do PhD dissertations take 12–24 months?

A PhD candidate approached me after their advisor asked them to add an additional variable to research that had already settled on a defined set of variables.

This wasn't just a matter of adding another section.

The new variable meant revisiting parts of the research design and reconsidering how it fit into the existing study — work that had already been planned needed to be reconsidered, which added complexity to the whole timeline.

This is one reason PhD timelines are hard to predict.

A project can be progressing exactly according to plan and still change significantly when an advisor asks for another variable, angle, or area of investigation. A 12–24-month planning window gives much more room for the kind of unexpected change that's fairly common in doctoral research, not the exception.

How does one change move everything?

A research project rarely moves neatly from one stage to the next — I've seen one early decision reshape almost everything that came after it.

A student studying strategic management practices within Malaysian construction companies ran into a different problem: they weren't sure their research population was the right fit.

They also questioned whether the research significance was clear enough, and considered shifting focus from medium-sized construction contractors to larger companies — wondering whether the existing proposal could stay largely the same with just the wording changed, or whether it would need broader revisions.

What actually happened

It required broader revisions. Changing the study population meant changes to the research questions, objectives, significance, literature review, methodology, and eventually the analysis too — the kind of cascade a methodology worksheet is meant to catch before it reaches this point.

This is why a realistic timeline should be divided into phases rather than treated as a fixed checklist: define and refine the research question, establish the methodology, conduct the research, analyze the findings, write and revise, and prepare for submission. Each phase needs enough flexibility to absorb the changes that naturally come up during research.

Most graduate schools build in their own dependencies here too — Michigan's Rackham Graduate School, for instance, requires a pre-defense review and a minimum notice period before committee members can even receive your draft, on top of whatever time your own writing takes.

What does actually slow people down?

A student balancing full-time work with their dissertation had around 5,000 words left for the discussion and analysis section — fitting the writing into evenings and weekends around their job. But the process took far longer than simply writing 5,000 words. Each revision was shaped by advisor feedback, which meant revisiting the analysis, strengthening the discussion, and making further changes before moving on.

The student wasn't delayed because they were writing slowly — their available time was limited, and each round of advisor feedback opened another stage of revision.

Realistic timelines need to account for work commitments, feedback cycles, and revisions, not just word count. It's worth knowing this isn't unique to any one program: Emory's graduate school timeline guidance makes the same point about sequencing — you can't schedule your analysis before you've collected the data it depends on, and committee turnaround has to be built into the plan rather than assumed away.

How do you build your own timeline?

Start with your submission date and work backwards through each major phase, assigning realistic time to research, analysis, writing, feedback, and revision. The goal isn't a perfect schedule — it's one that gives you enough room when the project inevitably changes, because it usually does.

In practice, that means going further than just listing phases on a calendar:

None of this needs to be complicated. A simple table with phases down one side and target dates across the top does most of the work — as long as you're actually opening it and updating it, not just filling it in once at the start.

Is my research question too broad?

If you're struggling to define what your research will actually investigate, your question may be trying to cover too much. A strong research question should be specific enough to guide your methodology, data collection, and analysis without becoming unmanageable.

What should I do if I can't get enough participants?

Don't wait until the end of your data-collection period to address it. Revisit your recruitment strategy, check whether your criteria are unnecessarily restrictive, and discuss possible alternatives with your advisor before changing the research design.

What happens if I don't get ethics approval on time?

Build the possibility of delay into your schedule. If ethics approval is required before you can begin data collection or analysis, a delay here affects everything that follows. Keep your advisor informed and use the waiting period to prepare whatever work you can complete without approval. A revision request here is about risk and consent, not your research question — IRB is checking risk and consent, not whether your research question is any good.

How much time should I leave for revisions?

More than you think. Revisions aren't limited to proofreading or a few sentences — advisor feedback can require changes to your argument, analysis, methodology, or entire sections. Leave room for multiple rounds of feedback and revision rather than treating them as a final-day task. Stuck on a comment like 'needs more depth'? That's usually a one-question fix with your advisor, not a sign you are behind.

Final thoughts

So — are you already behind? Probably not, but you might be measuring the wrong thing. Word count is the number that's easiest to track, but it's rarely the number that decides your timeline.

What decides it is how settled your research question is, how far your methodology has to travel before it's approved, and how much room you've left for the feedback and revision that almost every dissertation needs more of than expected.

The students I've seen finish on time weren't the ones who wrote fastest — they were the ones who knew, early on, which parts of their project were actually settled and which parts only looked settled.
